Q. Modchip-wizard Hi there
I’m hoping you can help me with some enquiries please.
I’ve just bought a Nintendo wii for the kids for Christmas and I would like to make backup copies of the games to use in the console (so I can Play Original Games from all Regions and keep the originals out of harm’s way and try some great Legal Wii Homebrew applications). I believe I need to have a chip inserted into the console so backup copies can be read in the machine.
The Serial Number on the console is LAH106706585 The Model Number is RVL-001(AUS)
Could you please provide some info regarding which would be the best chip to put in the machine and why.
I believe I also need a certain DVD drive to read the original disks (such as LG-8164b, LG-8163b, LG-8162b and LG-8161b).
I’ll get one of those drives on ebay I presume. I have also downloaded Rawdump 2.0, RegionFrii 1.21 and WiiBrickBlocker to make these backup copies.
Additionally, I already have Nero on my pc at home to burn the game.
I would be looking to travel to Melbourne to get this done as I can only presume I can’t get it done here in Albury Wodonga.
Any thoughts you have would be greatly appreciated and thanks for your help in advance.

Yes the Latest Manufacturing change has come about to improve production costs of the latest Wii Consoles in the Form of a Modified Wii Drive board being hailed D2C 2 or D2C-2. As a result the standard D2C modchip firmware does not function on them - In answer Modchip developers for the Wii have released some new firmwares to work on the newer consoles.
The D2C chip only has one line of writing saying “GC2-D2C”. This Wii is showing now all regions. The text “APCB D3 94V-0” which is present on some D2C2 boards is NOT on my board. Up till end of May 2008 were not modifiable - latest Wii chip bios can now modify these consoles !!
Wii D2PRO version that support new D2C 2 consoles, included support of D2C and old DMS consoles.

Modchip-Wizard If I was to buy a PAL Wii would the D2c chip enable me to play NTSC games as I already have the chip or would it still require a better chip and if it doesn’t what is really the advantage of having the chip installed at all I have also read that if you do have the chip you can’t upgrade the machine on line without it bricking the machine is this the case

A. D2C Chip is the name of the DVD drive chip on the Wii console - it will only play games from the Country you bought the Wii- eg. an Australian PAL Wii can play shop bought original PAL Games.
By installing a Mod-chip in the Wii like "ARGON" and "D2Pro" will enable the console to play games from all regions- Europe, Japan, USA ( NTSC Wii Games ) and Australia ( PAL Wii Games ) and make legal backup Wii games or copies to play.

I am currently running Wii Menu 3.2 (latest), my friend lent me ''Battalion Wars 2' and 'super smash bros brawl'
in NTSC-Japan, i understood that D2Pro can playback other region games with 19 wires but as soon as i insert the disc 'super smash bros brawl' NTSC japan into my PAL Wii console it asked me to perform a software upgrade from the game disc.... i just want to know if its safe to perform the update from disc when the disc is from a different region to the console.
A. Yes you can patch the dash safely - with a game from a different Region or Same Region - This is the same for Wiikey , Wasabi, D2C ARGON , D2PRO chips for Wii - By patching the dash your Wii console will be able to play more Wii games by increasing compatibility. By Patching your Wii from a Game with a Different Region Code will change the video output settings of your Wii though - if you have a multi system TV this is Fine- If you need to change back just Insert a game with an Auto update from your region to override the previous out of region patch.

An example of a semi-brick Wii issue is : When the system settings have been bricked from using an out of region game disc that has updated the system setting. The DVD drive is still operable and can still play all wii game discs ( original and copy ) making it possible to update with the correct firmware and unbricking the system settings. In these cases some of the Wii menu items may double up or appear in different language and clock settings and menu items are no longer accessible. An example of a bricked Wii issue is : When the Wii Console can not be recovered - is when an out of region update flashes the Wii DVD drive. This making the DVD drive inoperable due to the DVD drive not working - not even Original Wii games will load. In this case - Nintendo Can Unbrick the Wii after the chip has been removed. EXAMPLES - SPM had a NTSC(U) 2.0U firmware on it. I think the firmware included a DVD Drive update which bricked the DVD drive of PAL Wii's by flashing the drive with the incorrect firmware. This not letting the Wii boot up correctly. Mario Strikers PAL had a 2.1E firmware update. Which only was a settings update which bricked NTSC(U) settings due to the 2.1E firmware being flashed. The DVD Drive was not updated with the wrong firmware so it still worked. This allowing those who bricked the Wii settings with the Mario Strikers update to unbrick the settings with the 2.2U firmware that was included with the Big Brain Academy. The firmware update on Big Brain Academy changed the Wii settings firmware from 2.1E to 2.2U correcting the firmware back to the right region. Super Mario Galaxy NTSC has a firmware update which only effected the Wii settings due to the firmware being flashed. The DVD Drive was not updated with the wrong firmware so it still worked. We fixed the problem by inserting the PAL version of Super Mario Galaxy which had a Later dated firware update and restored the Wii console settings.
